When a taxpayer fails to pay a tax owed to the IRS or a state taxing agency, a lien arises in favor of the Government against all of the taxpayer’s property.  Failing to act to resolve a tax collection matters can destroy a taxpayer’s credit rating, lead to seizures of a taxpayer’s assets and even lead to the loss of a taxpayer’s home.  Despite what you often hear advertised, it is rare for a taxpayer to resolve a tax collection matter for “pennies on the dollar.”
